Image A: Piece of Creative Work from High School

For my HSC Design & Technology major design project I designed a new school to go on my existing school's land. I set myself the challenge of having unlimited funds to design the school of the future which would not only make use of modern teaching equipment and techniques, but also be a place of education where students would want to be educated. Using Autodesk Revit 9 I created plans, elevations, sections, renders and walkthroughs for all 9 buildings I designed including: an Aquatic Centre, Administration block, Library, Science block, TAS & Art block, Sport & PDHPE block, Computers block, General Learning block and a Staff, Performing Arts & Auditorium block. Even though the design process became a chore in the end I still loved every minute of designing the buildings which convinced me architecture was the right thing to do.


Image B: Building that Inspired You to Become an Architect

Frank Lloyd Wright’s "Fallingwater" is one of the many buildings that have inspired me to become an architect. The way the natural surroundings have been integrated is amazing as is the way the cantilevered sections of the building mimic the rock ledges of the waterfall. What is more amazing is that Fallingwater is one of Frank Lloyd Wright's more famous buildings yet it has many structural problems. Wright ignored advice from the contractor as to the cantilevers having inadequate reinforcement. It is only through the contractors secretive reinforcement of these cantilevers and the later conservation work done on the building that it is standing today.

This is a photo I took of a Japanese maple in my backyard during autumn last year. During autumn the changing levels of chlorophyll, carotene and anthocyanins, which each reflect and absorb their particular spectrums of light, changes the colour of the leaves. Even though these leaves are dying they are becoming more vibrant in colour than a healthy green leaf. The survival process of a tree through winter shows us that we still have a lot to learn from nature.
